Mar.15 – China’s top advisory body concluded its annual session Thursday
morning after adopting a political resolution that calls for more effort
for social harmony and firm opposition against the secessionist
activities in any form to seek “de jure independence of Taiwan”.
As year 2007 is of great importance in the country’s drive of building a
harmonious socialist society, all the advisors should earnestly perform
their duty in political consultation, democratic supervision and
participation in and discussion of state affairs to make contributions
for social development in all fields, said the resolution passed at the
closing meeting of the annual session of the Chinese People’s Political
Consultative Conference (CPPCC) National Committee.
“Everyone has the responsibility to promote social harmony which will
benefit all the people in return,” said the resolution.
The CPPCC members should pay more attention to people’s welfare and
should raise more high-quality proposals by carrying out in- depth
investigations to find out the needs of the public, said the resolution.
In addition, the CPPCC members should fully play their role to promote
the harmonious relations between different parties, nationalities,
religions, social classes, and compatriots from both home and overseas,
helping the Party and the government to resolve the problems directly
concerning people’s interests, said the resolution.
The resolution also called to promote the peaceful development of
mainland-Taiwan relations and firmly oppose to the secessionist
activities to seek “de jure independence of Taiwan” through so- called
constitutional reform.
“We shall firmly oppose the secessionist activities in any form to seek
the ‘de jure independence of Taiwan’, while sticking to the basic
principle of ‘peaceful reunification and one country, two systems’ to
keep the peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait,” the resolution
said.
“We shall actively expand exchanges and cooperation across the Strait,
promote direct mail, transport and trade links and seek peace,
development and welfare for the compatriots on the both sides of the
Strait with our greatest sincerity,” said the resolution.
The resolution urged different parties, organizations and people of
different nationalities under the CPPCC mechanism to make contributions
to the reunification of the motherland and the great rejuvenation of the
Chinese nation by uniting Chinese people both at home and abroad.
More than 2,000 advisors attended the closing meeting of the Fifth
Session of the Tenth CPPCC National Committee that opened on March 3.
Top Chinese leaders including Hu Jintao, Wu Bangguo and Wen Jiabao were
present at the closing meeting presided over by Jia Qinglin, chairman of
the CPPCC National Committee.
The CPPCC members fully support the government work report by Premier Wen
Jiabao, reports on the work of the Supreme People’s Court and the Supreme
People’s Procuratorate, and the draft property right law and the draft
enterprise income tax law, according to the resolution.
In addition, the advisors also adopted several other resolutions,
regarding the work of the standing committee of the CPPCC National
Committee over the past year, the handling of and feedback to the
proposals and suggestions they put forth at last year’s full session, and
the examination and acceptance of their proposals this year.
According to a report adopted at the closing meeting, the CPPCC members
attending the annual session had submitted a total of 4, 516 proposals by
2 p.m. on March 9.
The proposals cover a variety of issues ranging from improvement of
macroeconomic control and building of modern agriculture and new
socialist countryside, protection of non-state companies’ rights and
benefits, financial reform, innovation, cultural undertakings and other
major topics that attract wide social attention.
There are nearly 2,000 proposals on issues that have direct bearing with
the people’s daily life, such as education, medicine and healthcare,
production safety, housing, employment and social insurance, charity and
farmers’ income, and resources and environmental protection.
In the proposals, CPPCC members also aired their support to the national
endeavor to improve the legal system for social justice, combat
corruption to build a clean government.
The CPPCC National Committee is set to submit its members’ proposals,
after examination and selection, to 169 government departments and
agencies that are responsible to deal with related issues, said the
report.
Founded in 1949, the CPPCC consists of elite members of the Chinese
society who are willing to serve as the think tank for the government and
for the country’s legislative and judicial organs.
As an open forum where the ruling Communist Party, the non- Communist
parties of China and people with no party affiliations discuss state
affairs freely and on an equal footing, the CPPCC National Committee has
been the manifestation of China’s socialist democracy.
The advisory body participates in state affairs mainly through making
proposals to government departments on various issues concerning China’s
economic and social development.

Birthday newspapers popular in Zhengzhou

www.chinanews.cn 2007-03-13 10:52:55

It is fashionable to send one’s friends a newspaper published on the day
he/she was born as a birthday present in Zhengzhou, Henan Province, to
remind him/her what happened on his birthday. It takes at least 200 yuan
to buy such a paper, even 500 yuan, but most Zhengzhouers believe it is
worth the price. The pictures was taken on March 11, 2007.
