China to further raise train speed

www.chinanews.cn 2007-03-19 16:50:12

Chinanews, Beijing, Mar. 19 C From 1997 to 2004, Chinese railway system
had raised train speed 5 times. On April 18, a new round of speed
overhaul will be implemented. By then, train speed for most trunk lines,
including Beijing-Harbin, Beijing-Shanghai, Beijing-Guangzhou,
Lanzhou-Lianyungang, Hangzhou-Zhuzhou, Qingdao-Jinan, Wuchang-Jiujiang,
and Guangzhou-Shenzhen, will be raised to 200 kilometers an hour, with
train speed for some of the lines reaching 250 kilometers an hour.
Compared with previous speed overhauls, the new round of speed raising is
considered as a complete breakthrough in the railway system. It will not
only bring challenges to the railway construction (including cable
layout, bridge construction, and tunnel construction), power supply
system and telecommunication system, but it will also test the
capabilities of train cabins and motor car system in China. In addition,
the transportation system, the environment and the quality of train staff
will also be put to a new test. If there are any errors occurring in any
chain of the whole system, it will bring immeasurable losses to the
railway system, said Liu Zhijun, Minister of Railways.
So far, the security construction system made for the sixth speed
overhaul has been moving on smoothly and the quality of fixed equipment
and mobile devices in railway system has been upgraded. Motor cars made
by China that can travel at a speed of 200 kilometers or more per hour
have come off the production line and have sustained the trial run test.
China has finished the renovation of 400,000 freight trains which
traveled at a speed of 120 kilometers an hour. The quality and
technologies of the mobile system in the train have been upgraded to meet
requirement for the faster speed. In addition, related monitoring work
and the safety issue for the speed upgrade have been strengthened. New
regulations have been put in place and the training of railway staff has
kicked off.
