KFC fried food safe to eat
www.chinanews.cn 2007-03-14 09:25:56
Mar.14 – Health authorities have declared the fried food sold at KFC
outlets safe to eat after testing cooking oil samples from six outlets
and finding all of them fit for human consumption, CRI reported.
The authorities tested cooking oil collected from six KFC stores in
Beijing and the Shaanxi province after a health scare over the quality of
the food the franchise serves in Shaanxi. Some chain stores were caught
re-using the same cooking oil for as many as 10 days in a row, prolonging
the lifespan of the oil by adding a special “oil powder”. Some experts
believe this practice many cause cancer.
According to the CRI, the authorities found the additive is composed of
magnesium trisilicate, an odorless and tasteless white powder. The powder
increases the number of times cooking oil can be re-used to deep fry food
because it absorbs odors, colors and impurities from oil. It also reduces
acidity, turbidity and oxidization.
China and many other countries permit the powder to be added to cooking
oil.
