China yesterday finalized a contract with a consortium, led by the
US-based Westinghouse Electric Co, to build four nuclear power reactors
in the eastern part of the country.

Neither party revealed the amount involved in the contract but earlier
media reports had estimated it to be $8 billion.

China will use Westinghouse’s AP1000 technology to build the four
reactors, two of which will be in Sanmen, Zhejiang Province, and the
others in Haiyang, Shandong Province.

The cooperation between China and the US will be “crucial” in the
development of the country’s third generation nuclear power technology,
Vice-Premier Zeng Peiyan said.

“The contract will result in the first-ever use of advanced US nuclear
power technology in China,” Westinghouse President and Chief Executive
Stephen Tritch said.

Based on standard Westinghouse pressurized water reactor technology,
AP1000 is “the safest, most advanced nuclear power technology in the
world”. It has been chosen for at least 12 reactors in the US to be built
in the next 10 to 12 years.

The deal is expected to generate at least 5,000 jobs for Westinghouse and
its consortium partners, the company said.

Work on the first reactor is expected to begin in 2009, and it will
become operational in late 2013. The other three are expected to come on
line between 2014 and 2015.

Japan’s Toshiba took majority control of Westinghouse last October. Two
months later China signed an MOU with the company for the four reactors
after it outbid competitors Areva of France and Atomstroiexport of Russia
following a two-year negotiation process.

Nuclear power is the most important electricity generating method after
thermal power and hydropower in China, and the country has become the
third-largest nuclear power producer in Asia. Only Japan and South Korea
generate more nuclear power.

All nuclear reactors in operation or being constructed in China have
employ the first- or second-generation technology from France, Canada or
Russia.

This year the country formed the State Nuclear Power Technology Corp
(SNPTC), which is mainly in charge of developing third-generation nuclear
power technologies. The registered capital of SNPTC is 4 billion yuan
($528.89 million).

The central government will fund 60 percent of the company, and the rest
will come from four large State-owned enterprises, including the
country’s two nuclear conglomerates CNNC and China Guangdong Nuclear
Power Holding Co.

Cuba and the United States each won two gold medals while the host Brazil
also took one on the first day of athletics competitions at the 15th Pan
American Games on Monday.

Yipsi Moreno of Cuba won the women’s hammer with a mark of 75.20 meters,
followed by her teammate Arasay Thondike in the second place at 68.70.
The bronze medal went to Jennifer Dahlgren of Argentina in 68.37.

Cuba also won the day’s women’s discus throw event through Yarelis
Barrios at 61.72 meters. Another Cuban Yania Ferrales was only one
centmeter behind for the silver, followed by Elisangela Bdriano of Brazil
60.27.

“I could have competed better. I had two invalid throws, but I didn’t
give up and I won the competition. I achieved my goal, that was to win
this medal.” said Moreno after winning the hammer throw title.

“I have practiced a lot to succeed in the games, but I wasn’t expecting
to overcome myself. With today’s results, I believe the world record is
not as far as I thought. Now I have to train more.” Moreno said.

The United States won the two long distance running events of the
day–men’s 5,000 meters and women’s 10,000 meters.

Sara Slattery clocked 32 minutes 54.41 seconds for the women’s event
while Ed Moran took the men’s race at 13:25.60.

“This is the first time I win a gold and it thrills me. It was a tiring
race, but the thrill of the victory brings great happiness. I thank all
my team for the support.” said Sara Slattery after winning the women’s
10,000 meters.

Brazil won the athletics gold in the women’s pole vault as Fabiana Murer
cleared 4.60 meters to beat April Steiner of the United States and
Yarisley Silva of Cuba to the second and third places respectively.

Brazil also won the titles of women’s modern pentathlon and men’s
wakeboard of water ski. Canada won the remaining two gold medals, both
from water ski, out of the nine finals contested on Monday.

The United States ended the day on top of the medal table with 147
medals, including 60 gold. Cuba is second with 31-14-20, and host Brazil
third with 29-23-39.

A total of 121 gold medals are still at stake before the Pan Ams close on
Sunday.

Australia coach Graham Arnold has labelled defending champions Japan as
the favorites before the two giants’ highly-anticipated quarter-final
clash on Saturday.

The Socceroos laboured out a spot in the knockout stage after three
shabby matches, they were overshadowed with regards to the way they
played even in their 4-0 victory over Thailand. While Japan eased through
by some comfortable games to top Group B. Arnold has realized their
rivals’ great form.

“I think Japan deserve to be favorites. If you look at the group games
they have been in better form than us,” said Arnold at a press conference
on Friday.

“Their local players in the J. League are in the middle of their season
so at this stage they deserve to be favorites, but saying that,
Australians love to be underdogs. We had our first final against
Thailand, we came through that, and this is our second one.”

Arnold will be without Luke Wikshire, who got his second yellow card
during the win over Thailand, but the good news is Lucas Neill could come
back after a one-match ban.

“Japan have played a slow, patient style up to now in Hanoi but a fast
pace would suit us because we have got players who thrive on fast
football and love playing fast attacking football.”

“Japan are a very, very good side and we are going to have to perform at
our best to be successful. We have trained very well over the last few
days since we have been here in Vietnam, the group is very happy. The 4-0
victory over Thailand gave us a lot of confidence and we are looking
forward to it.”

Brazil launches scientific research rocket

Brazil successfully launched on Thursday its VSB-30 scientific research
rocket from the Alcantara Launch Center, in the northeastern state of
Maranhao.

The 12-meter rocked will fly for 20 minutes at an altitude of 280 km,
during which it will conduct experiments on the behavior of materials at
reduced gravity. At its apogee, the rocket will experience near-zero
gravity for a little more than six minutes, then return to earth where it
will be rescued from the sea.

Brazil’s scientists have sent up nine experiments covering biotechnology,
engineering, physics, nanotechnology and medicine.

Colonel Fausto Barbosa, from the launch base, said that they had improved
launch security since 2003, when a craft exploded and killed 21 on the
ground.

Gene variant increases risk of blindness

Researchers have found a gene variant that can more than double the risk
of developing the degenerative eye disease, age-related macular
degeneration.

British researchers published their findings in the 18 July edition of
The New England Journal of Medicine.

The macula lies at the center of the retina and is essential for detailed
central vision. Degeneration of the macula interferes with important
tasks such as reading and driving.

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD), the cause of which is poorly
understood, is the leading cause of visual loss in older people and the
commonest cause of blindness in the United States and European countries.

The researchers based their findings on studies of patients with AMD (603
from England and 244 from Scotland) who were compared with 701 unaffected
people.

They found that a variant in the complement C3 gene influenced the risk
of developing AMD. For the 30 percent of the population who carry one
copy of the so-called ‘fast’ variant the risk of AMD was increased by 70
percent, and for the 4 percent of people with two copies of the ‘fast’
variant the risk of AMD was more than doubled.

The complement C3 gene has a central role in the immune system. The
results of this research provide strong evidence that inflammation is an
important part of the disease process in AMD.

The goal of this type of research is to achieve a full understanding of
the causes of AMD, which should lead to the development of better
treatment and strategies for prevention of this common and debilitating
disease.

Information about the medal standings, which has been non-existent since
the start of the games, were finally available on the official website
since Monday.

The South Africa delegation scratched their head on seeing the data and
wondered why they were put in the second place after Algeria in the
medals table.

Hajera Kajee, the head of Team South Africa, said there existed
discrepancies between their own count and the official one concerning the
medals table.

“The big concern is that the medal totals for the different sporting
codes on the website don’t seem to add up,” Kajee said.

According to the official sources, South Africa lie at the second
position of the medals table with 34 golds after they won four golds from
the swimming competitions on Tuesday.

Zimbabwe’s swimming sensation Kirsty Coventry won a record fifth gold
medal at the games after she triumphed in her specialty 200m backstroke.

But it was South Africa’s Natalie Du Toit who stole the limelight of the
day when she beat other five able-bodied swimmers to win the women’s
1500m freestyle gold.

The South African sporting icon, who has her left leg amputated in 2001
after a vehicle accident, showed admirable mettle and prowess as she
finished first with a prosthetic leg.

Du Toit, whose heroics drew applause and cheers from the stand, said her
next target is to qualify for the Beijing Olympics and compete with other
world-class able-bodied swimmers.

Tunisia captured one gold from weightlifting competitions to remain at
the third place of the medals table with 28 golds.
